Textured glass is one of the most engaging and versatile materials we work with at Hammerton. Hand-textured and kiln-fired glass shades and diffusers offer a wonderfully rich alternative to flat glass, fabric or acrylic shades. It appeals to both our visual and tactile senses and beautifully accommodates a variety of interior styles.
As an aesthetic element, textured glass can solve a number of design challenges. It brings warmth to cooler contemporary interiors. It provides an interesting visual counterpoint in a room with predominantly smooth surfaces. It also adds airiness to spaces with lots of heavy finish materials. For example, we recently custom designed over-sized fixtures of textured glass to add weightless volume in a large Colorado residence that featured floor-to-ceiling walls of rock and wood throughout.
Of course, fabricating textured glass is a time-consuming craft based process requiring skilled artisan talent and multiple passes through the kiln. As a result, it’s rarely been found at accessible price points — until now! The Hammerton Studio offers two versatile collections that accommodate most budgets:
- Our Rimelight Collection features glittering panels of crushed, kiln-fused glass in three colors.
- Our Textured Glass Collection offers three beautiful interpretations of familiar textures and patterns.
These handcrafted designs showcase the decorative elements of textured glass by enhancing the visual interest of each fixture in unexpected ways. Take a look at these collections in the gallery above, along with a few of our other favorite lights featuring textured glass, and tell us what you think.
