PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: CHARLES RIVER WINE CELLARS

October 15, 2014

We love to feature American artisan manufacturers who share our high standards for aesthetic and functional design. Charles River Wine Cellars is an excellent example.

What started out as a simple passion for beautiful wine cellar designs launched Edward Loughran into a world of specialty varietals and high style storage solutions. As a stonemason by trade, Loughran’s attention to high quality craftsmanship can be seen across New England. Indeed, his personalized designs — whether for wine tasting or showcasing — all reflect the artistry and complexity of winemaking itself.

In 1999, Loughran founded Charles River Wine Cellars after assembling a strong group of professional artisans and designers. Fusing a dual passion for craftsmanship and fine wine, every cellar design executed by his team reflects the exceptional skill and impeccable quality of numerous custom features, ranging from LED accent lighting to weathered stone accents.

Loughran’s affinity for high quality materials, excellent craftsmanship and sophisticated artistry naturally struck a chord with our team at Hammerton. In a collaborative effort with designer Randi Skiffington of Interiors By Randi, a beautiful wine cellar design was completed for a client’s home on Lake Winnipesaukee and finished with several of Hammerton’s elegant, old world-inspired light fixtures.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: GLENWILD RESIDENCE

September 26, 2014

Breaking from the norm is a regular occurrence at Hammerton. For this custom hilltop home in Park City, Utah, Hammerton collaborated with interior designer Leslie Schofield and architect Mike Upwall to strike a unique balance between Craftsman sensibility and organic contemporary style.

Schofield’s intention was to create a fresh and modern aesthetic with a subtle nod to the legacy of Greene & Greene. The home’s contemporary Craftsman style inspired our team to incorporate different design elements that would resonate as both timeless and innovative. A series of custom designed fixtures both complemented the natural materials used in the home and highlighted the classic principles of Arts and Crafts style. Click through the gallery above to view the final results of this collaborative project.

To learn more about our custom work, browse through our online catalog and portfolio of past projects. Email or call us at 801.973.8095 to speak to one of our team members.

WORK IN PROGRESS: LITTLE AMERICA PROJECT

August 15, 2014

It maybe the dog days of summer, but at Hammerton we’re busy as ever with a number of exciting custom projects slated to ship in the coming weeks. One of the most unusual is a signature centerpiece for the new steakhouse currently undergoing construction at the AAA Four Diamond-rated Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. Hammerton is thrilled to work with the talented team at Denton House Design Studio to bring this project to life.

Over 20 feet in diameter, the fixture will feature five “branches”, each 8 feet in length, interlocked to create a 20-foot diameter wreath-like sculpture that is suspended from the restaurant’s dramatic coffered ceiling. The life-size branches will give the fixture an organic quality, while contemporary elements of color, texture and illumination will create a sleek aesthetic appeal that simultaneously evokes sophisticated elegance and reassuring warmth. Also in production are several custom sconces that will carry the organic branch motif throughout the restaurant.

The Hammerton team has been working closely with designers and project managers from both Denton House and Little America to flesh out all aspects of the project, from concept development and materials selection to finish details and installation logistics. The gallery above provides a snapshot of  progress to-date — stay tuned for a look at the final result in the coming months.

As background, the Little America Hotel chain is part of a collection of hotel and resort properties owned by the family of the late Robert Earl Holding, who was one of America’s most successful entrepreneurs and largest landowners at the time of his passing in April 2013. The family’s other properties include Little America hotels in Arizona and Wyoming, the Sun Valley Resort in Idaho, the Westgate Hotel in San Diego, the Snowbasin Ski Resort in Huntsville, Utah, and, most recently, The Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, which was originally constructed to accommodate attendees of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and is one of only two AAA Five-Diamond Rated hotels in Utah.

We’ll post pictures of the finished installation later this fall.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: RICHARD WALKER’S PANCAKE HOUSE

July 29, 2014

One of the most iconic breakfast restaurants in both greater Chicago and San Diego just opened a new location in La Jolla! Locals and visitors can now enjoy an award-winning breakfast in a gorgeous environment at Richard Walker’s Pancake House. Not only are they home to the best Baked Apple Pancakes around, but they also happen to have excellent taste in lighting too!

For his new restaurant, Walker worked with the incredible Tahoe-based design teams at Aspen Leaf Interiors and The Lighting Showroom to customize fixtures from Hammerton’s Lightspann collection. Along the center isles and above the tables and booths, Walker and The Lighting Showroom team incorporated our slumped, fused and painted crystal glass fixtures. Tastefully done just like their pancakes (and with a similar shape too!), these fixtures add sophisticated style and a warm glow perfectly suited for dining in comfort.

Richard Walker’s Pancake House joins a long and impressive list of restaurants across North America that feature Hammerton Lighting. Browse through the gallery above to view how our American-made light fixtures created a beautiful yet approachable appeal to this warm and doubly inviting pancake house.

TWO HAMMERTON HOMES WIN 2014 MOUNTAIN HOME AWARDS

May 27, 2014

We’re excited to announce that two Hammerton projects have won the 2014 Mountain Home Awards from Tahoe Quarterly magazine. Both Hammerton and Lightspann light fixtures were featured in these beautifully-designed homes — one authentic lodge-style and the other mountain contemporary. We enjoyed working with all the architects, builders and designers involved in these projects and congratulate each of them on their achievements.

The first award went to a classic lakefront home on Lake Tahoe that boasts European flair and authentic lodge-style features. Architect Dennis Zirbel looked to the home’s natural surroundings for inspiration, incorporating granite boulders from the site and other natural materials like Douglas fir and cedar to give the home an authentic mountain feel. Builder Robert Marr Construction brought this vision to life, navigating some of the trickier aspects of the lot, including the 100-foot change in elevation. Inside, interior designer Trish Dietze with Juniper Hill Furniture and Design continued the classic mountain look with a variety of rich materials and furnishings.

Hammerton custom designed all the major decorative lights exclusively for the home. The authentic lodge architecture and native finish materials provided the perfect backdrop for a Craftsman-inspired lighting design defined by dramatic, large-scaled fixtures. One such fixture can be found at the top of the cupola in the great room. Similar fixtures are located throughout the home, providing continuity to the interior and infusing the home with lodge-style details.

The second award went to a mountain contemporary home in Martis Camp on Lake Tahoe designed by The Sandbox Studio architects and built by Tony Hardy Construction. The architect and builder, along with interior design firm Hudson Design and the client, worked collaboratively on creating a cozy yet sophisticated getaway defined by contemporary touches and a breathtaking mountain backdrop. A custom Lightspann Cyclone chandelier was selected as the centerpiece fixture for the great room, underscoring the home’s modern, eclectic feel.

Are you feeling inspired by these award-winning homes? If you’re currently working on a large-scale design project and are in need of custom lighting design, contact Hammertontoday for more information about our services.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: WILDRIDGE RESIDENCE

March 4, 2014

The common denominator among great mountain interiors is striking that elusive balance between reassuring warmth and surprising design. Hammerton “raised the bar” design-wise for this mountain modern home.

Located in Beaver Creek, Colo., Hammerton’s Wildridge Residence project combines reassuring warmth with surprising design in a transitional mountain interior by AP Resort Concepts. A combination of both custom and catalog fixtures from Hammerton’s Contemporary and Seriph collections juxtapose warm accents of steel mesh, mica, blown glass and rich patinas with boldly scaled contemporary forms. This dramatic approach to the home’s decorative lighting design beautifully complements the classic exposed beam architecture and cozy furnishings.

Take a closer look at our Wildridge Residence project in the gallery above. We’d love to hear your thoughts on these custom lighting designs.

CUSTOM FIXTURES HONOR A CLIENT’S IRISH HERITAGE

November 15, 2013

A large project currently in progress for an Irish family offers a wonderful example of the custom motifs we are frequently asked to create.

The clients, who are building a part-time home in the United States, turned to Hammerton to design a collection of lighting that incorporated a subtle reflection of their Irish heritage. Together, we conceived a decorative Celtic knot motif woven into a stylized design, as shown in these two fixtures.

A few more designs for this client’s custom Celtic series are still in production. Stay tuned for an entire feature on this project in 2014.

Are you aware that a number of beautiful motifs are offered as standard options on many Hammerton fixtures?  View our motifs options here , or contact us to talk about designing a custom motif for your next lighting project.

AN AVIATION-INSPIRED BAR LIGHT TAKES FLIGHT

October 21, 2013

This wonderfully whimsical fixture — created, of course, for an aviation enthusiast – is an excellent example of the custom work we do with customer specified materials. What started out as a vintage propeller was cleverly transformed by our designers and artisans into an eye-catching work of functional art. The client pilots his own plane around the world and asked us to incorporate his love of flight into a fixture for his home in the California High Sierras.

Our design team procured a 70 year-old J3 Cub propeller to serve as the main component of the fixture. Extending from it are three lashed rawhide shades, each featuring a hand-inked illustration of a vintage aircraft from the same era. The combination of restored wood and hand-lashed rawhide underscores the fixture’s frontier feel. Says the client: “Everyone loves this light!”

Hammerton’s custom design services extend far beyond simple modifications of a catalog product. Contact us today to talk about creating a one-of-a-kind fixture for your home or project.

COLORADO RANCH OFFERS YEAR-ROUND LUXURY MOUNTAIN LIVING

September 29, 2013

A Steamboat Springs luxury ski house featuring Hammerton lights was recently given the spotlight as the Wall Street Journal’s “House of the Day.” Priced at $5,100,000, this enchanting ranch is much more than a ski house as it compasses the true essence of luxury mountain living during all four seasons of the year. As Wall Street Journal reporter Stephanos Chen explains, “While first attracted to the area for its ski appeal, the owners built this lakeside home to take advantage of its year-round beauty.”

Gorgeous timber frame construction is met with beautiful rustic furnishings and decor, and the floor plan boasts amenities including a wet bar, wine room and game room. Rich textures ensure warmth in the winter while light neutral backdrops allow interiors to take on a beautiful glow in the daylight. And while skiing is the property’s main attraction, the home’s close proximity to a lake, golf course and miles of hiking trails and climbing makes summer living just as exciting and bountiful.

Enjoy a virtual tour of this four-season luxury Colorado retreat in the photo gallery above.
